If you ask the average elementary school student why Christopher Columbus is so important, she'll probably answer: "He discovered America."

But did he? Historians claim he secured financing from Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, secured three ships, and headed west to find the Far East.

Unfortunately for Columbus - but fortunately for generations of vacationers - he discovered the Bahamas.

The someone who nothing else but discovered this continent was Amerigo Vespucci, who reportedly set foot on South America. Hey, we named the continent "America" after him, right? But was Vespucci the first explorer here?

Before 1492, the history gets a microscopic unclear. There's some investment that another European crew and - even earlier -- folks from other lands arrived on this continent.

But despite all the controversy, most Americans remember Columbus, because they heard this discoverer's name first. The first someone to achieve any record, or make any discovery, commonly gets remembered.

If you answered Washington, Alexander Graham Bell, and Neil Armstrong, congratulations! Now, name the second someone to achieve each of the goals above.
