Library of Congress control whole - What is it and Does Your Book Need It?

Library of Congress operate number (Lccn), as the name implies, is assigned by the Us Library of Congress. It is of course a reference number to find the bibliographic data, or catalog record, for a exact work in the Library of Congress (LoC). It is not, as some publishing newcomers tend to believe, a call number for finding a exact edition or format of a single title. Therefore, you only need one Lccn to cover a hardback and paperback for the same title or to cover new editions of the same title.

Library of Congress control whole - What is it and Does Your Book Need It?

The Lccn's purpose is to help the LoC avow its catalog records and to help other librarians gather LoC cataloging data as an aid to creating their own catalog entries for new acquisitions.

The Lccn is included on the book's copyright page, and all recently assigned Lccns should be printed without hyphens (the first four digits for books entered into the LoC catalog since 2000 recite the year the Lccn was assigned).

You can gather an Lccn only from the LoC through one of these two programs:

Cataloging-in-Publication (Cip) program: provides a complete bibliographic report created by the LoC for books not yet published, which is then printed on the book's copyright page (Cip data includes the Lccn). Preassigned operate number (Pcn) program: provides a LoC-assigned Lccn if the publisher requests it and is popular ,favorite for it, but it will not include any bibliographic data.

So, which agenda should you use? You probably won't have much option if you are self-published or run a very small publishing enterprise that primarily publishes your own books.

According to the LoC itself on its Cip agenda page:

"Only U. S. Publishers who issue titles that are most likely to be widely acquired by U.S. Libraries are eligible to participate in the Cip program. Book vendors, distributors, printers, yield houses and other intermediaries are ineligible. Publishers who have published the works of fewer than three different authors are ineligible. Self-publishers (i.e. Authors and editors who pay for or subsidize publication of their own works; who often do not issue the works of more than three different authors; and whose works are rarely widely acquired by the nation's libraries) are ineligible."

According to the LoC's Pcn agenda page:

"Only U.S. Book publishers are eligible to participate in the Pcn program. These publishers must list a U.S. Place of publication on the title page or copyright page of their books and avow an editorial office in the U.S. Capable of answering substantive bibliographic questions."

Getting that Lccn through the Pcn agenda is a two-step process: first apply for a Pcn inventory (might take up to two weeks) and then apply for a Pcn (Lccn) for your book (they say this might take 1-2 weeks but we usually get ours within a day or so).

Once you have an Lccn through the Pcn program, you can always pay somebody to create the Cip data. This data cannot be labeled "Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication" on the book's title page but, instead, must be clearly labeled "Publisher Cataloging-in-Publication" (Pcip).

Is Pcip worth paying for? Although there are differences of idea on either its proximity will lead to more library sales, a Cip block is an inexpensive increasing that may help sell books to libraries and may make your self- or micro-publishing enterprise appear more established, professional, and knowledgeable. Probably the biggest advantage to having Pcip data for your book is that it may get your book cataloged faster and out on the shelves of libraries faster than books for which the librarians have to create the cataloging data.

Whether you select to buy Pcip data or not, be sure to get your Lccn from the Library of Congress and include it on your copyright page.

It is, after all, free.

"Switch How to convert Things When convert is Hard" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath business Book narrate

Business mavens, Brothers Heath released their new book, entitled, "Switch: How To turn Things When turn Is Hard," (Broadway, 2010), in February. The authors address turn at the individual, organizational, and societal level. turn involves the brain's emotional and rational side. The Heath brothers recognize the overpowering emotional element as the Elephant. The rational, decision-making component is secondary and sits atop the Elephant as the Rider. When conflict between the two exists, the Rider is inherently the underdog. To make lasting change, the Elephant and Rider need to unite. Also key is having clear direction. Following is an example from each of the nine system contained within the triad to perform long-term change. It's fine that the turn framework benefits anything without a vast amount of authority or resources.

"Switch How to convert Things When convert is Hard" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath business Book narrate

Direct The Rider-Analytical, Rational Thinking.

Find the arresting Spots. In 1990 an international society that helps needy children proper a Vietnamese government invitation to decrease malnutrition. They earned six months to make a difference. The short timeline negated ending poverty, purifying water and construction sanitation systems to address starvation. Organizers traveled to a rural community and met with mothers. Despite total malnutrition, some children were thriving. Why? The team searched for arresting spots-successful efforts worth emulating. They discovered arresting spot moms fed their children four times a day (easier on kids' digestive systems), vs. The proper two. Another looking among any was that arresting spot moms added shrimp and crab from the rice paddies into their kids meals. Cooking classes originated with arresting spot moms teaching other mothers how to put in order wholesome meals for their children. The mothers already had the emotional component (Elephant) - natural concern for their kids. They needed direction (Rider) not motivation. Six months later, 65 percent of the community kids were better nourished and stayed that way.

Script the critical Moves. Doctors studied a case history of a outpatient with lasting arthritic hip pain. Their options were to perform drastic hip exchange surgery or administer a singular untried medication. They chose the drug 47 percent vs. Doing hip surgery. Another physician set studied a similar case history with two untried drugs presented as a choice. Here, only 28 percent of the doctors chose one of the prescriptions. The remainder prime hip surgery. The study results display decision paralysis. Too many choices tax the Rider's strength; and it will always revert to the status quo. turn creates uncertainty and ambiguity. Any successful turn requires translation of ambiguous goals into concrete behaviors. Script the critical moves (not every move but key moves). In the above studies, the critical directive to "Use invasive options only as a last resort" would have resulted in more physicians choosing the drug option. Clarity dissolves the Rider's resistance.

Point to the Destination. In the mid 1980s a beloved speculation firm's investigate division ranked an embarrassing fifteenth in its capability to originate earnings for banks. Top executives recruited a new leader who became both Gm and coach. He announced that he thinkable, analysts to launch at least 125 client conversations a month. He promoted a team environment; requiring analysts to cite colleagues' work at least twice during presentations. He also declared that the firm would crack the premiere speculation magazine's Top 5. He not only scripted the critical moves (make 125 calls, cite colleagues' work); he also created a destination postcard- a vivid picture from the near-term hereafter that shows what could be possible. In three short years the firm leapfrogged from fifteenth to first place. When you spin a compelling destination you decrease the Rider's capability to get lost in prognosis paralysis.

Motivate The Elephant-Emotional, Instinctive.

Find the Feeling. In the late 1970s, a state's division of Youth Services (Dys), an division that focuses on delinquent kids; overhauled its operations. Nonprofits including group homes and halfway houses replaced youth prisons. The head of accounting for Dys ruled his division with an iron fist, earning the title of Attila the Accountant. Charge reports submitted with a singular mistake like a date omission or miscalculated subtotal were returned to the offending nonprofit for corrections. The organizations operated on a shoestring budget and delayed payments jeopardized their capability to aid kids. Frustrated, Attila's colleagues invited him on a field trip to visit some participating nonprofits. He witnessed firsthand their operational and financial challenges; and returned to the office a changed man. He was still authoritarian but less nitpicky about Charge record submissions, allowing the nonprofits to receive their payments faster.

Shrink the Change. A local car wash ran a promotion using loyalty cards. One buyer group received an 8-stamp card, earning a free car wash once filled. Another buyer set received a 10-stamp card, with 2 stamps already completed, advancing them 20 percent towards their goal. any months later, only 19 percent of the 8-stamp customers had earned a free car wash, vs. 34 percent of the head-start group, which also earned their free car wash faster. The authors state that people find it more motivating to be partially ended with a long-term goal than to be at the beginning gate of a shorter one. How could you rally your family, coworkers, community, etc. To perform a long-term goal by highlighting what's already been ended towards its completion? To motivate an uninspired Elephant, shrink the change.

Grow Your People. In 1977 the St. Lucia parrot faced extinction. Island natives undervalued the bird, some even eating it as a delicacy. No clear economic case for recovery the parrot existed. Conservationists knew an analytical case for protecting the bird would fail. Instead, they implemented an emotional appeal. Their goal was to convince St. Lucians that they were the kind of people who protected their own. They wanted St. Lucians to swell with pride over their exclusive island species. The St. Lucia Parrot Campaign included T-shirts, bumper stickers and locally recorded songs about the parrot. The animal became part of the natives' national identity. In 2008, conservationists noted that no St. Lucian had been caught shooting the parrot in fifteen years, resurrecting the species from extinction.

Shape The Path-Provide Clear Direction.

Tweak the Environment. The airline manufactures abides by the "sterile cockpit" rule. Anytime a plane is below 10,000 feet, whether ascending or descending (the most accident-prone times), no conversation other than flight-related is permitted. At 11,000 feet the crew can talk freely. An It group adopted the sterile cockpit tenet to progress an leading software development project. They aimed to cut new product development time from three years to nine months. They established "quiet hours" Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings before noon. It gave coders a sterile cockpit, allowing them to join on complex bits of code without being interrupted. Ultimately, the group achieved their nine-month development goal. What looks like a people problem is often a situational challenge. people have a systematic tendency to ignore situational forces that shape other people's behavior. Simple tweaks of the path can yield dramatic behavioral changes.

Build Habits. One of the subtle ways our environment influences us is by reinforcing (or deterring) our habits. Habits are leading because they're behavioral autopilot. They allow good actions to happen "free" without taxing the Rider's self-control, which is exhaustive. To turn yourself or others you need to turn habits. Forming a habit involves both environmental and thinking influences. "Action triggers" are sufficient in motivating action. They preload a decision and are most useful in difficult situations when the Rider's self-control is strained. Activity triggers originate "instant habits."

Rally the Herd. A hotel manager tested a new sign in the hotel bathrooms. It simply stated "the majority of guests at the hotel reuse their towels at least once during their stay." Guests who got the sign were 26 percent more likely to reuse their towels. They took cues from the herd. In ambiguous situations we all look to others for cues about how to behave. turn situations often involve ambiguity along with their possible unfamiliarity. To turn things, you must pay concentration to group signals. They can whether warrant a turn effort or doom it. Lead an Elephant on an unfamiliar path and it's likely to ensue the herd.

The authors talk that turn isn't always easy. When turn works it tends to ensue a pattern. people will turn with clear direction, ample motivation, and a supportive environment. The Rider, Elephant and Path need to align in withhold of the switch. Visit the authors at http://www.heathbrothers.com.

Why Christopher Columbus is So prominent

#1. Why Christopher Columbus is So prominent

Why Christopher Columbus is So prominent

If you ask the average elementary school student why Christopher Columbus is so important, she'll probably answer: "He discovered America."

Why Christopher Columbus is So prominent

But did he? Historians claim he secured financing from Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, secured three ships, and headed west to find the Far East.

Unfortunately for Columbus - but fortunately for generations of vacationers - he discovered the Bahamas.

The someone who nothing else but discovered this continent was Amerigo Vespucci, who reportedly set foot on South America. Hey, we named the continent "America" after him, right? But was Vespucci the first explorer here?

Before 1492, the history gets a microscopic unclear. There's some investment that another European crew and - even earlier -- folks from other lands arrived on this continent.

But despite all the controversy, most Americans remember Columbus, because they heard this discoverer's name first. The first someone to achieve any record, or make any discovery, commonly gets remembered.

Need examples of some "firsts"? Then try this microscopic quiz: Who was America's first President? Who was the first man to compose the telephone? Who was the first someone on the moon?

If you answered Washington, Alexander Graham Bell, and Neil Armstrong, congratulations! Now, name the second someone to achieve each of the goals above.

Think about how important first place can be in any industry or profession. And think about how - in your industry - you can be determined for first position in any category.

Finally, I advise a great book to you on this subject. It's called Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout.

Electronic healing Records - The Pros and Cons

--Recorded Books Catalog of Electronic healing Records - The Pros and Cons--

Electronic healing Records - The Pros and Cons

In this digital age, more and more bulks of information which used to be paper-based, from library catalogs to telephone books, are digitized and stored in a central location for easy access. The idea of Emrs started about 40 years ago.

Electronic healing Records - The Pros and Cons

The main proponents of Emrs cite the following advantages:

(1) The use of Ehrs supposedly reduces errors in medical records. There is no doubt that handwritten records are subject to lots of human errors due to misspelling, illegibility, and differing terminologies. With the use of Emrs standardization of outpatient health records may eventually come to be acheivable.

(2) Paper records can be undoubtedly lost. We have heard how fires, floods and other natural catastrophes destroy bodily records of many years, data which are lost forever. Digital records can be stored virtually forever and can be kept long after the bodily records are gone. Emrs also help keep records of health information that patients tend to forget with time, i.e. Inoculations, old illnesses and medications.

(3) Emrs make health care cost-efficient by consolidating all data in one place. Previously, paper-based records are located in different places and getting access to all of them takes a lot of time and money. In a systematic review, Kripalani et al. Evaluated the transportation replacement in the middle of customary care physicians and hospital-based physicians and found valuable deficits in medical information exchange. The impart recommended the use of Emrs to conclude these issues and facilitate the continuity of care before, while and after hospitalization. Emrs translates into good medicine for patients. Take the example of one asthma center's caress with Emr: "A major advantage associated with Emr implementation was the growth in the number of children who were hospitalized with an asthma exacerbation and received an asthma action plan upon discharge. Prior to the Emr system, [only] 4% received an asthma action plan upon discharge. After implementation of the Emr system, 58% received an asthma action plan upon discharge."

(4) Emrs can save lives. VeriChip, advanced by VeriChip Corporation is the first one of its kind ever popular ,favorite by the Us Fda. It enables rapid identification of at-risk patients and access to their medical history, thereby enabling rapid analysis and medicine especially in urgency situations. Excellent examples are people with diabetes and/or heart problems who have high risk of collapsing and having attacks. VeriChip is also beneficial in vehicular accidents and other trauma incidents where the victims aren't capable of answering questions. In cases of large-scale catastrophes, VeriChip facilitates tracking and identification of victims. Agreeing to a coroner in Mississippi, VeriChip helped recognize victims while the Hurricane Katrina incident.

Earlier this year, Google health was launched, an online personalized health records service. Google health is based on the principle that since it's the patient's medical record, the outpatient should operate it, conclude what should be in it, and who gets access to it. One of the features of the aid includes records from hospitals and pharmacies that are Google Health-enabled or are registered Google health partners.

The HealthVault is someone else online health information warehouse aid offered by Microsoft with features similar to Google Health. Keith Toussaint, senior agenda manager with Microsoft HealthVault recently stated " prominent hospitals like Beth Israel Deaconess medical town are undoubtedly integrating their systems with both us and Google -- because some people like one or the other. It's a Coke or Pepsi thing."

What are the disadvantages of Emrs? Not surprisingly, privacy ownership advocacy groups are the main opponent of Emrs. Here is what they have to say:

(1) Emrs threaten our privacy. In this day and age when people's mantra is "I need my privacy", not many people are comfortable about having their whole medical history recorded and digitized for almost just any person to see - in other words, incursion into people's privacy. The confidentiality of physician - outpatient relationship is still sacrosanct. Besides, medical data can be used against a someone in some cases - be it for a job application, insurance coverage or a college scholarship. Although it is against the law to discriminate against people with illnesses and disabilities, it is a fact of life that the fitter you are, the more competing you are in the job market. The planned incorporation of genetic data in Emrs added adds to people's fear of incursion into their inexpressive sphere.

(2) Emrs can lead to loss of the human touch in health care. In the process of digitalization, the interpersonal aspect in health care may be lost. In handwritten hospital charts, doctors and other health care practitioners may write what they think and they feel based on their personal observations in their very own words. Emr is naturally about ticking off boxes and crossing out things in electronic forms. The doctors are forced to think in categories and can seldom express a personal opinion on an individual case. Because of the lack of flexibility of many electronic reporting systems, cases of misclassification of patients and their conditions have been reported.

(3) Emrs are not that efficient. Despite efforts in digitalization and standardization, Emrs are undoubtedly far from being standardized and not as sufficient as it is purported to be. It often happens that one clinic's Emr principles is not compatible with that of a general practitioner or someone else clinic's system, thus belying the claim of added efficiency. In addition, not all users of Emrs are satisfied with the current state of the art. Although the objective is generally efficiency and healthcare quality, one study showed that nurses in the Netherlands are not thoroughly satisfied with their Emr implemented in 2006-2007.

(4) Emrs are not safe and secure. Google health and HealthVault are quick in assuring patients of the protection of their online health accounts. access to the patient's account is only inherent using log ins and password. In addition, HealthVault assures that "all health information transmitted in the middle of HealthVault servers and agenda providers' systems is encrypted" and that Microsoft does it best to use the "highest standards of protection to safeguard buyer health information from theft, loss, or damage."

However, there are cases wherein passwords and encryptions do not seem to be sufficient as data protection tools. Stories of data hacking, stolen identities and blackmail abound. Even high protection databases such as those run by banks and prestige institutions are often compromised. This impression was aggravated by the many well-publicized incidences of data loss or breach. A few examples are listed below:

November 26, 2007, Canada. Hackers accessed medical information on Hiv and hepatitis from a Canadian health branch computer. - September 22, 2008, Uk. The National health aid (Nhs) reported the loss of 4 Cds in the mail containing information on 17,990 employees. - September 30, 2008, Us. The company Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana confirmed breach of personal data, including social protection numbers, phone numbers and addresses of about 1,700 brokers. The data was accidentally attached to a general email.

In addition, there is commentary over Google health not being a "covered entity under the health insurance Portability and accountability Act of 1996 and the regulations promulgated thereunder (Hipaa)" under its terms and conditions and is therefore not subject to Hipaa privacy of individually identifiable health information. The HealthVault terms and conditions do not mention Hipaa privacy laws so it is not clear what its status is about this issue.

(5) VeriChip is not for humans. It is to be thinkable, that although many of us are amenable to the use of Rfid chips in pets, the idea of implanting similar chips in human beings is bound to raise hackles in humans, no matter what the Us Fda says. A big opponent of the VeriChip and similar chips of its kind is the buyer advocacy group Spychip.com. In a position paper, Spychip and many advocacy and buyer awareness groups see Rfid tagging (be it on your someone or on the items you buy) as a major threat to privacy and civil liberties. They see the tagging as some kind of "Big Brother" operation. someone else group, the No VeriChip Inside Movement, likens VeriChip as "cataloguing" humans similar to the way the Nazis have tattooed numbers on the skin of attention camp detainees. Popular Hollywood films on privacy incursions (e.g. The Net, social Enemy No. 1) increased added people's paranoia about personal data.

Where do we go from here? Without doubt, we have the technology to make Emrs standardized and efficient. Google Health, Microsoft HealthVault and similar online personalized health information accounts are enabling patients to take operate of their medical records. The main issues that need to be overcome are data security, protection of privacy and gaining the belief of the patients. It doesn't seem evident that the use of Rfid and similar tagging chips will come to be suitable or Popular anytime soon. However, we live in a digital world and we cannot hold back enlarge indefinitely. With improved technology and data protection tools, let us hope the Emr issue will be resolved soon.

How to permanently Delete Files - Using Windows secret Built-In Tool

You may or may not know that when you drag items to the trash on your computer, they aren't permanently deleted. Just watch an lesson of your favorite Csi show, and you'll see that its inherent to recover files that haven't been deleted properly. And while I'm sure you're not guilty of any Csi type crimes (or are you?), I'm sure you want to figure out how to permanently delete your files and keep your incommunicable things incommunicable -- after all everybody has to have some secrets!

How to permanently Delete Files - Using Windows secret Built-In Tool

Why emptying your recycling bin doesn't permanently delete your files

When you tell your computer to empty its recycling bin, your operating principles only deletes the records it has of the files you want to delete. Yet the files still remain on the hard drive memory.

Here's an analogy: If you think of your files as books in a library and you determine you no longer have use for a determined book. Emptying the trash is equivalent to removing the entry in the library's card catalog. The book is still there but not well found by everyday visitors. But if man well wanted to find it, and had a clue where to look, they quite perhaps do so since it is still physically there.

What it means to permanently delete a file

To permanently delete a file, you need to not only delete its record, but also overwrite the corporal measure of the hard drive where it lives. A low level format is equivalent to replacing your incommunicable file with random bits (1's and 0's). Lasting with the library analogy you need to take off take off the book, shred it, light up in flames and perhaps replace it with a distinct book

A easy way to permanently delete?

According to Microsoft, there is a keyboard shortcut in Windows to, quote, "permanently delete files". You do this by choosing your file and hitting Shift+Del. Convinced? Neither am I. What they're well explaining is a shortcut from having to move the item to the trash and then emptying the trash.

Take it a step further

Here's a poor man's version of permanent deletion. Delete your files, empty your recycle bin, and run Disk Defragmenter placed in the Start menu under Accessories/System Tools. What this will do is optimize your hard drive by rearranging (most) of your files, and in doing so will most likely overwrite the files you want permanently deleted. Nice!

Do it right and do it better

While performing a defragmentation will probably do the trick, it's well not a viable solution. Waiting for disk defragmentation is not something I'd do every time I wanted to do a permanent deletion. The defragmentation process is way too long. The right way to how to permanently and quickly delete files is to use a schedule specifically designed for that purpose. You're in luck too because most Windows operating systems have a command line tool called Cipher to do the trick!

Here's how to use Cipher:

1. After windup all windows, open up a command window.

2. Type the following: cipher /w:driveletter:foldername where driveletter and foldername correspond to the drive a location of where your deleted file used to live.

3. Sit back and enjoy your leisure and privacy while your file is truly permanently deleted!

Here's an example:

I have a picture I want permanently deleted which stored on my computer at the following location:

C:imagesscandalous_picture.jpg

After deleting this picture and emptying the recycle bin, I would type the following (in a command prompt) to ensure that I can still run for senator (as long as they don't catch me in the airport bathroom):

C:>cipher /w:C:images

I can then move on to my life of privacy and carefree surfing!

You can do better!

Although I'm comfortable working with the command prompt, you may not be. No worries, there are plenty of other graphical based software tools that perform true permanent file deletion -- not to mention they are much less tedious to use. The impart at freedback.org/Reviews/Software/Permanently-Delete-Files.html gives a good overview of some of the most favorite graphic-based file deletion software available.

overall vs Abridged Audio Books, What's the Difference?

No.1 Article of Audiobooks

Never given belief to seek out full, selections in your audio book purchases? full, audiobooks can offer more listening contact per limited for a lower cost. But what's the difference?

Unabridged audio books contain basically any book recorded whole. Usually recorded as the author (and Usually the editor) intended it published in its primary print form, they receive limited or no editing. In other words if the print version of the book contains 500 pages, every word, sentence and paragraph from those pages will change to an audio format.

Audiobooks

On the other hand an abridged audio book works just the opposite. Condensed from its primary form, the author and or editor approve this version before production. Condensing may squeeze that 500 page book into 200 pages worth of recording. Often called the "reader's digest" version in audio book form, you'll literally find it much shorter than the original. As an example of this you might think of a movie adaptation of a book as an abridged version of the primary work.

overall vs Abridged Audio Books, What's the Difference?

Many times the reasons to abridge are to save space. Where an full, audio book would take maybe twelve Cd's, the abridged version might take only four. The publisher can then payment a slightly less whole for the abridged version and earn more profit without losing much from the story?.Or do they?

As an example for cost and size I looked up one of my favorite titles by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen, The One limited Millionaire. The abridged version consists of three Cds that run 3 hours and 20 minutes and costs about . The full, version offers 10 Cds that run for 12 hours 21 minutes and retails around . Although I haven't listened to the abridged version I have to wonder just how much data was left out and what possible important parts.

Looking at the example I gave, for a limited more than twice the price you get roughly four times the listening contact and knowledge! The example prices I gave are retail. By using an audiobook club such as SimplyAudiobooks or Audible that offers titles for buy or rental the savings could be much much more.

To get the most enjoyment out of your audio book selections look to see if an full, versions is available. For the most cost savings join an audio book club and get full, titles whenever you can.
